The I-580 Express Lanes are an innovative transportation initiative providing all commuters a reliable travel choice: speedier rides for public transportation and carpools, and the opportunity for solo drivers to pay a toll electronically to use the lanes. Construction on the I-580 Express Lanes began in 2008, and the lanes are expected to open in early 2011. The new 580 Express Lanes run 12 miles from Hacienda Drive in Pleasanton, to just east of the Greenville Road undercrossing in Livermore. The eastbound stretch will feature two new tolled Express Lanes set apart for safety by new striping and convenient, clearly marked entry and exit points. Special striping and signage will clearly indicate specific entry and exit points, including: - Two entry-only points at Hacienda Drive and El Charro Road
- Three intermediate entry and exit points: west of Airway, west of N. Livermore Ave. and at First Street
Solo drivers who want a more reliable trip on eastbound I-580 will need to obtain and mount a FasTrak® toll tag on their windshields. They will be charged a toll each time they choose to use the Express Lane. Carpool vehicles with two or more people, motorcycles, transit buses and eligible hybrids will be able to use the lane for free and will not be required to have a toll tag. Small two-axle commercial vehicles equipped with FasTrak® can also use the lanes. FasTrak®is the same electronic toll collection system used on Bay Area bridges and throughout California. With FasTrak, tolls are collected electronically at highway speeds – no tollbooths or traffic gates, and no need to slow down or stop to pay the toll. Here’s how it works. Vehicles with a FasTrak® toll tag can enter and exit the lanes at three clearly designated points. Solo drivers entering the lanes will see an overhead electronic sign displaying the current toll. When the vehicle passes under a reader, the FasTrak® toll tag is read and the correct toll is automatically deducted from the driver’s prepaid FasTrak® account – no tollbooths or traffic gates, and no need to slow down or stop to pay the toll.
