How They Work

The Alameda County Express Lanes provide reliable travel to everyone who chooses to use them. And, they are simple and easy to use.

Solo drivers who want a more reliable trip on southbound I-680 and eastbound I-580 will need to obtain and mount a FasTrak® toll tag on their windshields. They will be charged a toll each time they choose to use the Express Lane. Small, two-axle commercial vehicles with a FasTrak® toll tag can also use the lanes. Solo drivers pay a toll electronically, but carpools, motorcycles and eligible hybrids can use the Express Lanes free of charge.

The I-680 Express Lane will operate Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is separated from regular lanes by double solid lines. Overhead electronic signs and new lane striping will alert drivers to access points for safe merging.

Vehicles equipped with FasTrak® can enter or exit the lanes at clearly marked points. Electronic signs display the current toll for solo drivers with FasTrak®. When the FasTrak®-equipped vehicle passes under a reader, the correct toll is automatically deducted from the driver’s prepaid FasTrak® account. No tollbooths, no stopping.

The toll will vary based on traffic levels in the Express Lanes to ensure traffic in the lanes continues to flow smoothly. As traffic increases, the toll increases. As traffic subsides, so does the toll. This process is called "dynamic pricing”.

FasTrak® and the 680-580 Express Lanes make it fast and easy to get you where you need to be.
