About the Express Lanes

The Alameda County Express Lanes are an initiative by the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (now the Alameda County Transportation Commission) to manage growing traffic congestion on I-680 and I-580 and provide people with new commute choices.

The Express Lanes are free of charge for transit buses and carpools, motorcycles and eligible hybrid vehicles equipped with a FasTrak® toll tag. Solo commuters can choose to use the lanes for a fast reliable commute by opening a prepaid FasTrak® account, installing a FasTrak® toll tag in their vehicle and electronically paying a toll. Toll prices are set according to the level of congestion in the lanes, with a goal to keep traffic moving smoothly. Tolls are collected nonstop at highway speeds using the FasTrak® electronic toll collection system. No tollbooths are used. All of the existing general purpose lanes remain free of charge to all commuters.

Benefits of Alameda County Express Lanes
